Corellas contest Nationals Heading Detail
The NSW Country Corellas will contest the Womens National Championships over the next four days at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
They will be looking to improve on last year’s sixth placing, a campaign which was hampered by injuries to several key players during the course of the championships on the Gold Coast.
The squad will have their work cut out for them as they have been placed in Division One with the ACT, Queensland and Sydney in the new look championship structure.
Each of the four Division One teams will play each other over a four day period and will accumulate points using the Super 14 Bonus Point System which will determine the winner.
Coach Steve Hamson is pleased with the process the new look Corellas have made in the build up for the championships, which has seen the team play two trial matches against Sydney and ACT. A third match was set down to be played against ASRU, but this had to be cancelled due to last week’s inclement weather.
The Corellas have a host of players with international experience, and Hamson will be looking to these players (Tobie McGann, Kylie Pennell, Alana Thomas, Rebecca Trethown & Margaret Watson) to lead the way.
Their first match will be against Sydney on Friday (3.00pm), followed by Queensland on Saturday (12.00pm) and ACT on Monday (11.15am).
At the completion of the championships the Australian Wallaroos Training Squad will be announced, from which the team to contest the RWC in England later in the year will be selected.
