Hunter Retain Championship Title

Hunter Retain Championship Title

Hunter Women’s Rugby Union has maintained their mantle as the NSW Country Women’s Rugby Champions by taking out the 2017 title.

The union’s twentieth championships were staged at the scenic lower north coast town of Forster, and following weeks of heavy rain, which had the championships in doubt on several occasions, fine weather prevailed on the day and a successful event was conducted.

Whilst Hunter went through the championships undefeated to maintain their long run of titles, they were pushed all the way by the other zones, which shows the strength of Women’s rugby is on the up in Country NSW.

The championship title was still on the line going into the last match of the round robin format, with Central West, Hunter and Illawarra all in contention to take out the main prize, and it was only in the last five minutes of the match that Hunter put the issue beyond doubt.

Host zone Mid North Coast, who were contesting their first championships, proved to be the surprise package, and sounded a warning early in the day when they won their first match against Central North.

Whilst the number of zones in attendance was on par with prior championships, the number of players was up, and it was obvious from the standard of their play, each of the teams had had strong preparations leading into the event.

Mid North Coast No 8 Kathleen Ostler capped off a strong performance on the field by being named the Player of the Championships.

Once again the Country selectors had quite a few headaches in their deliberations to select the Corellas squad which will contest the 2017 representative program.
