Lismore to host 2011 Country Champs Heading Detail

2011 Country Weekend Venue Determined

The Far North Coast Rugby Union has been awarded the right to host the 2011 Country Championship Weekend.

Oakes Oval and Crozier Field, Lismore will be the venues for the Country Championship Weekend on 26 and 27 March 2011.

This will be the first time the Senior Country Championships have been held on the Far North Coast since the inception of the championships in 1951.  The zone has previously hosted Junior Championships and Senior Representative Matches, but has never been awarded the Country Senior Event.

All of the nine Country Zones will contest the championships and will play matches in Seniors and Colts over the two days to determine the winner of the Caldwell Cup, Richardson Shield, Colts Championship and Colts Plate.

Four hundred plus players from around the state will participate at the Championship Weekend, which will also serve as the final selection process for the NSW Country Cockatoo and Country Cockatoo Colts Representative Squads.

NSWCRU President Bruce Worboys said “the Far North Coast Zone is the third largest in participation numbers in Country Rugby, and it’s fitting the Championship Weekend will be held on the north coastal region of the state for the first time”.

“The zone has worked very hard both on and off the field to improve Rugby on the North Coast, with their Junior successes now starting to flow through to the Seniors which was evident with the zone winning the Richardson Shield in 2010” he added.

He went on to say “Country Zones and Clubs had realised the Championship Weekend was a viable event, with the quality of the Tender Applications being very professional and competitive, and he thanked the Zones and Clubs who hadn’t been successful”.

The 2011 Country Championships will be played over two weekends, with the Qualifying Matches being played on 19 March 2011 at various locations across the state, and then the semi-finals and finals at Lismore on 26 and 27 March 2011.
